Old Codan - Is It Worth Keeping ?

My new old boat has A an old Codan VHF Marine Transciever radio which has the panel shown in the pic aswell as a much larger unit mounted under the chart table.
I also have the newer Icom VHF Marine IC M45.
I am not shore if its worth keeping or not, I am fairly shore its very power hungry, What are your thought?

Is this an old crystal unit? If so, toss it. VHF's are pretty reliable and you can buy both fixed mount and handheld units for under $80 if you want redundancy (and open up some nice real estate on your nav panel).

Oops, I just noticed you are in Australia where, according to what others are saying in other threads you may be paying up to a million dollars for a handheld VHF. If so, just buy one from the US and sneak it in.

Thanks for that, I have googled it & it looks like I need to keep it. I also recieved info & forms relating to becoming a liscenced operator, so, looks like a bit more research & some radio training is required.

Opps, sorry, I should have answered your question. Yes. it is worth keeping - and enjoy the learning curve. For the record, marine HF radios are also commonly known as a SSB radios so if you see any reference to SSB, then you know they are referring to "your" Codan.

If you don't have an operator's guide (manual), post the model number and I might be able to email one to you.

The Australian Codan HF was very commonplace before ready availability of Icom. Made in SA I believe and used for outback transmission as well.

Just an update.
We are getting ready to head out to Lord Howe Island and we are hoping to use the Codan for coms and weather updates.
The only thing is. We don't really know how to use it properly. ie. frequency's to use ect.
I was hoping there might be someone out there that could give us some pointers?

Listen on 8176 for forcasts. Emergency 4125 is your best bet, not 2182 anymore. See if it has the weather fax channels to receive.

Hopefully you have a list of the installed channels, it is a synthesized set, but frequencies are limited to 100 pre programmed (eprom) channels. Not bad units and potentially quite usable. I have one myself.

Best download the OMC radio operators handbook. And aim to get a licence if you want to transmit on it. In aus you need a ship station licence and a personal radio qualification (LROCP) to be fully legit for tranmission.

There is a photo of the remote unit, for want of a better name. At the top of this thread. I should be able to get the full model and pic tomorrow. Or maybe Gary is watching this??

Codan 9xxx series SBB where for there time pretty sofisticated and good quality. About 150 watts. No reason to dump it. The interfacing with pactor has the difficulty from the connector. It was only for sale in australia and expensive. But it does do a good job on i.e. Sailmail.

On second thoughts its is not a 9xxx series. But much older, before 1990.
Dump it.
