NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
Once upon a time my Google Earth had NOAA chart overlays and I believe it was via an EarthNC plugin. I have been playing around with Google Earth again on another computer and I can't get a chart overlay unless it is an online viewer. I have the Navimatics plug-in but it is too cluttered and the current NOAA EarthNC plug-in only shows buoys and markers without charts. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Chuck

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
Hi Chuck:If you click on one of the icons on the map, the pop up window will have an option to "view full size" which will get you where you want. I'm not sure what was changed...maybe a glitch that needs fixing there.

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
St. Elsewhere, thanks but I am looking for a display in my Google Earth on my computer and not an online viewer. Mike, The view full size also takes you on line and does not display the map in my Google Earth. Chuck

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
I do overlays in GE but had to calibrate the positioning by hand... but this was just a hand-drawn map from the US Army that I wanted overlaid on current satellite imagery:
You do that in the layers-section of GE.
ciao!

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
Chuck,
I remember seeing the NOAA charts as a menu item in Google Earth a year or two ago, but it seems to have disappeared. The closest thing I've found is EarthNC online viewer. Too bad GE ditched the charts--that was a handy feature. I've tried adding a chart image as a layer like Nick suggests, but you need to fiddle with it a lot to get even close to matching the aerial image.

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
The Navimatics plug-in will do chart overlays but the charts are so cluttered and have a gazillion push pins all over it that it drives me crazy. If I could figure out how to filter some of it out it might be OK. Anyone have any suggestions? Chuck

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
If have access to Fugawi Navigator then it supports chart overlays with Google Earth. Way cool feature if you have Internet access while under way. Quite handy for cross-checking charts versus satellite imagery.
You can also create overlays and same them for future reference when you don't have Internet access.

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
Yes, if you have different software you can do this; with TimeZero in a Furuno plotter or PC software like MaxSea or NobelTec, you can just download the satellite imagery and overlay that.
Note that you do not need an unlock code for the sat images and 3D info files... you only need unlock codes for charts and hi-res satellite which is only available for the Bahamas.
ciao!
Nick.

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
Thanks all but I am really asking for chart overlays for Google Earth without additional software or needing an online viewer. I had this for a long time until I changed computers. Chuck

Looks like that ain't gonna happen. I understand you rather have nothing than another solution; but realize that Google Earth is not a navigation program. For one, it doesn't use the Mercator projection that is used by charts. It is complicated enough to compensate for the angle of view of the satellites that provide the imagery data for them.
ciao!
Nick.

Re: NOAA Chart Overlays in Google Earth
Nick, I have several navigation programs and Google Earth is not one of them. We do use Google Earth for a number of things that have nothing to do with getting the boat from one place to another. The chart feature made some of those tasks easier but we still get it done without it. But thanks for the suggestions. Chuck
