NMEA Wind Insturment Troubleshooting

Issue started as intermittent windspeed/direction from a Garmin GWS-10 at the top of the mast. It was not showing up on the network at all when not working.

First, I replaced a suspect looking field connector at the mast step. Then plugged the instrument in at the bottom of the mast inside the boat. It worked fine. So I reinstalled the GWS-10 back on top the mast and worked for about a day.

While up the mast I noticed the mast head NMEA service connector was somewhat corroded so I went ahead and replaced that. I also tried adding an inline resistor at the top of the mast and that didn't help.

Next I removed the instrument again and plugged it directly into the t connector on the back bone and it still doesn't show up on the network. I also swapped the GPS antenna and the wind instrument on the backbone. The GPS antenna shows up when swapped but still no wind instrument.

How common would it be for a GWS-10 to go bad?

Re: NMEA Wind Insturment Troubleshooting

If the transducer works at the base of the mast but not at the top I'd suspect a bad in-mast cable our grungy connectors top/bottom.
