Re: NMEA-0183 and RS-422 vs RS-232

Greg...
I have been using different Chinese RS-422 to USB adapters from eBay. All of them were under $10 including shipping at the time I bought them and I've never seen any that wouldn't work.

Re: NMEA-0183 and RS-422 vs RS-232

Pavel -

My question was for Andrea, who was asking how to hook it up.

Yes, there are any number of sources for adapters, from the cheap and cheerful Chinese ones to "professional" equipment at eye-watering prices. There really is no reason to deal with RS-232 for NMEA as long as there is a USB port available. Personally I use a Keyspan adapter (now Tripp Lite) which had drivers for the Mac. Works a champ.

Re: NMEA-0183 and RS-422 vs RS-232

Pin 3 of the PC serial cable to nmea in + of the pilot. pin 5 of the pc serial port to nmea in - of the pilot.

this is for steering the boat from the laptop

I would also connect pin 2 of pc to nmea out + of the pilot and pin 5 to nmea out- (now both -s)

this would give you heading on the PC
