NEW POPULAR WIRELESS AIS FORUM

Hi all..

Have a look at this new AIS forum on the Popular Wireless pages:

PopularWireless Personal Wireless Bulletin Board: AN INTRODUCTION TO LIVEAISWORLD AND WEB VTS

I was invited to do their first posting and hopefully many other interesting AIS topics will follow.

Best regards
Tore in Costa Verde, Brazil

Nice site...

I don't know if people are thinking they are going to get cheap AIS by linking their onboard computer with Wi-Fi or cellular modem connection to one of these AIS sites. Just keep in mind that the land based websites have big delays in the AIS data and do not give near real time data.

I tried it from the boat. The data was ridiculously behind by a factor of a few minutes at times.

It is fun though to bring up the various sites out of curiosity.

Hi David.. Glad you liked our site...

As you point out, it is NOT to be used for navigation purposes. Nothing can replace
the speed of a signal received on YOUR onboard receiver.

All AIS data received in our Web VTS network is in 'real-time' on a 24/7 basis and
should be more than adequate for ANYTHING but navigation.

Our LiveAisWorld network is a mixed bag of data received from a variety of our users,
some by direct TCP/IP uploads every 5 min,by scheduled, hourly uploads via Shipplotter or by direct link to participating websites which can vary greatly in frequency.

Although NOT suitable for navigation purposes, it will however provide ADDED
information to your overall navigational INTELLIGENCE, where no individual instrument
should be relied upon 100%. Better some information than none. The overall PICTURE decides your action.

Happy sailing!!

You could call it the poor man´s AIS intelligence...
