As you point out, it is NOT to be used for navigation
purposes. Nothing can replace
the speed of a signal received on YOUR onboard receiver.
All AIS data received in our Web VTS network is in 'real-time' on a 24/7 basis and
should be more than adequate for ANYTHING but navigation
Our LiveAisWorld network is a mixed bag of data received from a variety of our users,
some by direct TCP/IP uploads every 5 min,by scheduled, hourly uploads via Shipplotter or by direct link to participating websites which can vary greatly in frequency.
Although NOT suitable for navigation purposes, it will however provide ADDED
information to your overall navigational INTELLIGENCE, where no individual instrument
should be relied upon 100%. Better some information than none. The overall PICTURE decides your action.
You could call it the poor manīs AIS intelligence...
