Need for external antenna on Garmin 741xs

So far with coastal cruising in the USVI, our Garmin 741xs has full and instant connection to GPS satts.

Seems like the built in antenna is pretty robust...

So that begs the question, is there really a need to add an external antenna?

What are some user experiences without an external antenna on passages and various places outside US waters?

Since the signals are received from satellites orbiting the earth in various directions there should be no difference outside the USA.

it would be needed if the unit was mounted down below and wasn't working. not because the boat moved.

How are you liking the 741 ? I'm thinking of getting one just to put under the dodger, along with the G-2 Vision chart upgrade.

Last boat was a Center Console fishing boat that I put a 740S and Radar in.
I was thinking that I would have to have an external GPS antenna as I flush mounted it in the console, and it was directly centered under the aluminum T top.
I kept the boat on a trailer inside of a metal aircraft hangar, after the install I turned it on and even inside of a metal building it was tracking 9 satellites.
I never worried about an external antenna after that.

Something has definitely changed with marine GPS installations with regard to internal antennas. I do not fully understand what, but it may be related to SnapTrack, a software development about twenty five years old that allows cell phones to get GPS fixes inside buildings, and in urban canyons.

Re: Need for external antenna on Garmin 741xs

Something has changed it seems, about two weeks ago I mounted a Vesper XB-8000 in the Nav station, directly under the VHF radio, and it seems to reliably track 7 or so satellites even in that location, while my OLD Raymarine plotter with it's external antenna mounted on the stern rail regularly loses it's fix.

We're digging it so far, especially with the G2 vision.

I love the touch screen
