Have you tried OruxMaps? Has a free version. Doesn't promise full capability, but does suggest it can use Garmin *.img charts.

I'm still going to give them an opportunity to work out the bugs though, because it is very cheap.

Disappointing to hear that. They're a global company, should have had their ducks sorted by now.

Re: Navigation / Sailing Apps for Android?

I use a Samaung Galaxy 10.1 with Navionics. The Galaxy has inbuilt GPS. I also run Navionics on my plotter but prefer to use the Tablet as it has a bigger screen and I get regular updates.
I also have an Android phone with six inch screen, also with Navionics installed.
As a last resort backup I have a laptop with GPS and Memory-Map charts.
No issues with this setup.

I was wondering if you used the Navionics standard or HD on your six inch phone as I was thinking of loading the standard on my Nexus 7 (much cheaper charts).

Has anyone tried this? If so was it successful?

I use the standard navionics and works fine. It is cheaper to buy it for your phone and then you can add it to your tablet.

Re: Navigation / Sailing Apps for Android?

New feedback on my Plan2nav.

I had it out for a great test run this week end.

I sailed all week end in the Thousand Islands with it. We covered 39 miles including 12 in fog. At no time did I have more than 2 miles sea room in any direction and at times was in channels less than 200 feet across.

Plan2nav performed excellently. For comparative purposes we had my brothers Garmin 78s with Garmin charts.

The Garmin undoubtedly had more robust software and more options, but there were situations where plan2nav performed better, especially when it came to displaying detail. When you consider the Garmin was $490 with the software and Plan2nav was free plus $12 for the chart- I would say it performed incredibly well.

My biggest complaint is I can't find a go to waypoint nav function on plan2nav, which I consider to be a pretty essential function on any GPS.

Over all- 2 thumbs up for Plan2nav, excellent app.

Hmmm... never tried to do that. Since our tablet can't control our autopilot, and since our main plotter CAN, never thought of it...

Re: Navigation / Sailing Apps for Android?

Stumbled upon a way cool app today while updating SailGRIB GRIB viewer. Same developer makes a full on weather routing app. First few test routes look pretty good. Factors in wind, tides, currents, polars for boat (editable), etc. You can do multiple iterations of the same route with different parameters, like changing the start time.

Haven't tested it in the field yet, but ran a few test iterations on a route I know well (Roatan to Glovers) and its recommendations look good. I ran this same route several times with different start times and its changes match what I know about local winds/currents there. See screen shot.

Free trail version. The full version is spendy for an Android app (@$35), but sure is slick.

Are you still using this program? I have a new Android tablet and am looking for a good grib reader. I used zygrib on my older windows tablet.

Thanks

Just a GRIB reader or a route planner?

SailGRIB WR is a route planner - there is also plain SailGRIB

Another good one is PocketGRIB. if you just want a plain, easy to use GRIBreader.

For the price why not get the route planner as well. It would be useful as a teaching tool.

The boat I am bringing back from Maui has Expedition.; I could compare the two.

Yes, SailGRIB WR, very slick. Just used it to do some weather routing for friends making a hop. Worked well. Good library of polars so you can find something close to the subject boat. If you really want to get specific you can even edit polars. A bit tedious though since there is no editing interface, raw numbers have to be edited in a spread sheet.

I also have regular SailGRIB and PocketGRIB. Both are better GRIB viewers than WR because you can load and view more GRIB parameters. WR really only deals with those parameters it uses for weather routing. For example, you can't overlay CAPE index.

Depending upon what Im viewing I sometimes prefer the presentation of one over the other. I tend to perfer PocketGRIB's presentation.
