Name this Antenna!!!

I have this antenna on my boat and do not know what it is. I suspect it was for the SSB. Anyone out there have any better guess?

Re: Name this Antenna!!!

Way out of my area of expertise, but I believe the quadrifilar helix (QFH) are used mostly for weather satellite reception. It's my understanding the satellite's have the same design.
I'm sure you will get a more "authoritative" response shortly.
Nice looking antenna I might add.

Re: Name this Antenna!!!

That antena is for Satellite Image reception
If you also have the receiver, you can get all those fancy color images of hurricanes, storms, clouds, .... from the satellites over your position

Re: Name this Antenna!!!

INTP is correct!!!

And, more specifically this particular QFH is for 137mhz LEOSAT (NOAA Weather Satellite) reception of the analog APT (automatic picture transmission) signals...

These APT images are fairly hi-res, real-time, local/regional weather satellite images of your location (typically within 300 - 400 miles of you)....

You can get as many as 4 passes per day.....but typically only, while the images are live / real-time, understand that you get them when the satellite(s) are in view, 2 - 4 times a day...

These APT images can be one of the best sources of up-to-date weather in remote locales (Southern Ocean, etc.), where there is limited weather info and sporadic forecasts available....and as such you will typically see "137mhz Turnstyle antennas" or "137mhz QFH antennas" on wide-voyaging offshore vessels....but few on the typical cruising boat (not even many on the typical ocean crossing boat, as there are other means of attaining good weather info/forecasts for most areas where you'll typically find most cruisers...)

I hope this helps...

Fair winds...

137mhz APT NOAA LEOSAT QFH Antenna is a bit of a mouthful....I hereby name this antenna......Jemima! May all who receive by her, be truly thankful.
