My New Handheld AIS Receiver . . . WOW !
Just kidding, I don't know that one exists but I am wondering how long it will be before there is a handheld AIS. It's using VHF, so why not. It would obviously have to have a little screen. Anyway, I would think it will come eventually.

Re: My New Handheld AIS Receiver WOW
Your smartphone will do AIS for about 5 bucks. Try Ship Finder.

Marine Traffic, an Android app, seems pretty good. And free:

iNavX for iPhone/iPad will display AIS targets on NOAA (and other) marine charts. Just need an internet connection (WiFi or Cell). Uses the free Siitech AIS service.

I think this:
iMux - The Brookhouse NMEA 0183 Wifi multiplexer
does exactly what you want.
An iPad is hardly a hand-held though.

Brookhouse iMux lets one interface their iPhone OR iPad to their boats onboard instrumentation (including an AIS receiver).

Re: My New Handheld AIS Receiver . . . WOW !
What does that mean?
I can say with 100% certainty that the Brookhouse iMux works with any Apple iDevice. I use it with iPad/iPhone/iPod touch without any issues. I will ask Brookhouse to update their site to indicate iPhone compatibility in addition to iPad.

The information from AIS web sites is not for navigational use. It is not real time and not guaranteed to be accurate.

Re: My New Handheld AIS Receiver . . . WOW !
One last try. My Internet connection very bad. Tried to post like 3 times:
Weird Brookhouse did not mention iPhone. Hence I thought I found a fake website, not the real thing.
Good if they add the info asap - it is a great solution.
Hence the OP's oryginal query got answered YES.
Cheers,
b.

Re: My New Handheld AIS Receiver . . . WOW !
Brookhouse is a very well respected company that has been producing multiplexers for many years. I see they updated the site to indicate all iDevice compatibility. Doubt someone would make a fake website for such a niche product.

AIS works with Navonics charts in iNavx?
If so how do you enable it?

Who needs a handheld? I've got AIS built into my skull. It's called eyes and ears.
