My First Radar: Good Choice?!

Garmin is the way to go. Very easy to use. Come preloaded with all the charts, tides and currents.

Never need to have a manual infront of you to change a setting.

Garmin has great support also.

Calling is prudent. This may be an indicator that maturity is occurring, but I now download the manuals for the stuff BEFORE buying it. This allows me to map out the connectivity and features ahead of time. It reduces the odds of an OH CRAP moment.

I may have misunderstood, but if you are thinking the depthsounder will notice a reef, it will, but only after you are on top of it. If you are looking for advance warning you will need a forward scanning sonar, such as the Interphase 200, which is like underwater radar. I've got it and love it. Sees 1000 feet ahead in deep water and 100 feet in shallow water. Great tool!

Theoretically, would this be able to see an oncoming ship or a floating sea container or whale?!
