My aerial for my stereo is connected to the mast

I have quite bad reception and can only get strong stations so i traced my aerial lead and it is just connected to the mast - both the inner and outer sheild is shorted and that's the way it looks designed - can this be correct? Is there a better method without putting an aerial on the mast?

Since you mention shield I assume this is coax cable? By inner and outer shield do you mean the center conductor and the woven shield around it?

If the above are correct then I would separate the center conductor from the woven shield and connect just the center conductor to the mast/rigging and see how that works.

the mast is probably grounded, so you'd still have just a shorted antenna if you connected the center to mast.

I would dissconect both from mast and spread inner / outer apart and see what happens. generally this isn't good, and you need to actully strip the sheild away as it's blocking the center wire.

I would also just try put a ~14awg single wire in the back of the antenna jack dangeling and compare it. often that's all you need.
