Mounting SSB Antenna Within a Wooden Mast

I am stepping a new mast and debating which would provide better SSB reception. A 12 meter wire up the inside of my wooden mast, or a short antennae that lays along side the pilot house flat.
I had reception for hundreds of miles on the antennae laying flat...I just don't like the fact that when it got loose it cut a hole in my trampoline.

I have an I|COM system.
I'm not really keen on using a mast stay with isolator.
