Starboard is very slightly textured. It also is just about impossible to glue. 5200 won't work believe it or not!
ABS is a completely different material.


Here is something from their website.

King StarBoard®, King StarBoard® ST, King ColorCore®, King ColorBoard® and King CuttingBoard® can not be glued using standard adhesives. Products like 3M’s 5200 work well as a water sealing caulk but will not adhere King StarBoard® to itself or other materials in a permanent bond. It is preferable to mechanically fasten or weld King StarBoard®, but when an adhesive is necessary you can use a product called Lord 7542-AB or 3M’s Scotch-Weld DP-8005. We do not represent these products, make any claims about their abilities or accept liability for them.

Did you have any issues with the thickness for small switches? I will mount a VHF (should be no problem as just a cutout), and a panel like yours.

This is why I use 1/4" base plus smaller section panels on top also 1/4". This allows you to mount the switches in 1/4" while you still get the support of 1/2". It is more work of-course.

Alternatively, you can drill from the back side. Start with a Forstner drill bit that is big enough to allow room for the housing of the switch. Drill halfway into the material, then switch to the smaller bit for the mounting thread of the switch and finish the hole The problem is that you need access to the back of the panel for this.
