Masthead anemometer (wireless) with display?

Hello from Northport, Michigan. Can someone tell me of a good reliable masthead anemometer that is wireless and has a display (preferably 110 cm x 110 cm) that is mounted in (on) a cockpit wall, that shows speed, apparent and true wind direction? The Standard Horizon display (circa 1989) on my Pearson 27 quit. Thanks for any help. Don Ramsdell (dramsdoc@yahoo.com)

Re: Masthead anemometer (wireless) with display?

I have a Nexus wind instrument that is wireless. It is a few years old now. When it goes it is great but from time to time the matching between the masthead transmitter and cabin level receiver drops out. This necessitates climbing the mast to remove the unit and perform a reset by pushing a button. Pain in the butt! Given a choice I would avoid wireless.

I just installed the Garmin wireless wind sensor. For this first few weeks it works fine. I remain wary how it will work over time. I'm told the battery will need replacing every few years, which doesn't thrill me. We'll see

Garmin bought out Nexus a couple of years ago so it is probably the same technology.

I'm interested in this question too, we'd like to upgrade from guessing wind speed. We were contemplating a wired unit on our solar panel mount between twin backstays or a wireless mast head device. How different might be the readings and power consumption?. We routinely go up the mast at least twice yearly to varnish and generally check things so we're not afraid of that aspect.

I am interested in how big a boat takes that large of a display?

Re: Masthead anemometer (wireless) with display?

I have found three wireless that work with cell phone or tablet.
1. Calypso Cups calypsoinstruments.com
2. NaWifi2 nawifi2
3. Sailtime SailTimer Wind Instrumentâ„¢

Any comments or opinions on this type of wind instruments?

Re: Masthead anemometer (wireless) with display?

Reviving an old thread, I have 0.02€ to drop here and probably a lot more in the chandlery... My tacktick's bearing gave up, cups are stuck. The story costs me 2 trips to the mast, half day of fiddling and hopefully only a bearing to order. I am definitely not buying an other tacktick even at half price.

The ultrasonic calypso seems very interesting, no moving parts, wireless and the pricing is also more realistic than the ~1000EUR pieces.
