Well, that's been my point all along: you talk about "all these folks".

And I keep asking "all which folks" ... in the hope you will tell us who they are.

by the topic being continually diverted towards discussion of a fanciful option which most would not consider practicable, and many clearly consider impossible.

During a single-handed sail to Hawaii, Peggy Slater was thrown from her boat and trapped against the hull by the head sail for 11 hours.

Darn.
Do I have to go back and count them? Or is it just one?

I was hoping for a list. With addresses.

For distribution to the various national authorities.

To enable detailing the appropriate 'thought police' squads.

Door knocking at 3am, etc...

Re: Man Overboard with Auto Pilot Engaged!

In the story I referred to, told to me by the couple involved, a crewman was being dragged astern for fun. Apparently nobody was watching carefully. When they noticed he was no longer on the rope, by the time they cast off preventers and turned around, they could not find him.

Re: Man Overboard with Auto Pilot Engaged!

I was trying to make the point earlier about how a lighter weight boat will actually slow down once you grab the line. I still believe in the tether approach though.

Here is how one single hander does it when he is offshore. (I found this on the Single Handed Transpac Race Site. Return trip story)

http://sfbaysss.net/resource/doc/kam...ce-the-fun.pdf

Some of the safety considerations are a little different from the double-handed race. You don't have much use for a Lifesling, for example. What you do need is a way to climb back on the boat unassisted. The usual strategy is to tie one end of a length of dock line to the stern cleat (or stern pulpit base) with the other end tied to the toe rail maybe eight feet forward of the transom. The rope is adjusted to have just enough slack for the
middle to reach the water, forming a swim step at the waterline. Along with this system, size your tether so that if you go overboard you will drag right alongside your rope boarding assist line. One long tether secured on deck just behind the mast seems to work well; there 's enough length to let you pee over the stern, go to the bow, and reach most of the cabin without unclipping. But if you go over the side you'll be right next to the boarding line, and if your boat is small you will slow it down enough to have at least a good chance of hauling yourself back on board using the waterline-level rope step.

Re: Man Overboard with Auto Pilot Engaged!

Better than a long tether, which can drown you, is a jackline down each side deck, and a short tether.

Looks like I said 'little boat' in this post, my first post on the subject.
Upthread, a poster says "only later did he say little boat..."

This is one of seven fabrications about what I posted.

Any questions?

I hope life gets better for you.
Come clean on the thread I will do. And report it as it is borderline against the forum policy of "be nice".

Why did you not just post this post here first then? "Character and all" Instead of using PM?

Small boat is not descriptive enough.
A Cabo 38 is a small boat.

And if I remember correctly (I will let you go back and again quote yourself for me - and others - again, if you wish) you led all to believe you could do it on a boat (small - see above) at hull speed, ie. 5-7 knots.

But your'e right, I'm sorry we met like this.

Re: Man Overboard with Auto Pilot Engaged!

100 ft floating line with a cork bouy on the end. Attach it to the shift lever? you fall off, grab the bouy as it goes by, pull the boat out of gear and pull yourself along the line to the boat. That way you die of hypothermia next to your lovely boat!
Maybe better yet, rig a turning block and have the line pull the stop T handle if you have one.
Sailing... hmmm...?

Re: Man Overboard with Auto Pilot Engaged!

What are the odds of even grabbing a trailing line? How about someone who says they can do it giving it a few tries and getting back to us (video would be good).

Re: Man Overboard with Auto Pilot Engaged!

Those who think they can are probably right.

Those who think they cannot, probably ditto.

I'm not sure what it would prove for the former to advise or inform the latter.

If you think you cannot, there is only one way to find out.

Re: Man Overboard with Auto Pilot Engaged!

It's possible but I wouldn't want my life to depend on it.

P&S jack lines, a harness and a tether are pretty foolproof but we're not always hooked up.
