making a tiller pilot remote

I have a cape horn self steering gear. So that I can use it to steer when the engine is driving the boat I have purchased a small Simrad tiller pilot that will operate in the lazaret. How possible is it to wire port and starboard buttons on an extension cord!

Cheers in advance
