Make IPad GPS capable

So exactly what do I need to use my IPad as a back up to my chartplotter? What app? What do I do for an antenna? Forgive my ignorance on this subject.

Which ipad? If you have a 3G one then just download iNavX and some free charts. If you have the wifi only then you need a GPS puck and iNavX.

I have the wifi only. Where would I get a GPS puck? I presume once I had a puck I'd have the satellite signal I'd need to navigate offshore, essentially the puck would take the place of my usual modem?

The GPS puck receives the GPS signal and feeds it to your iPad. Try looking on Amazon for "Bad Elf". It plugs into the 30 pin port of your iPad. Then choose the software you want from the app store. Most people seem to prefer either iNavx or Navionics....your choice.

There are also Bluetooth-enabled external GPS receivers that don't require a wired connection to your iPad. Bad Elf, Dual, and Garmin make such, available on Amazon and elsewhere.
