I don't think that the base fee for Magic Jack includes overseas calls but Skype does + computer to computer calls are free world wide on Skype.

Magic Jack

The Magic Jack works from anywhere in the world but only places free calls to US and Canada. It also recieves free calls from anywhere. You pick a US phone #, mine 912-xxx-xxxx I live in Japan, anyone who calls that # rings directly to me in Japan like they were dialing a Stateside #. Also from here I pick up the phone, dial the 10 digit # to the us or Canada. I can't call local Japan #'s. They are adding more locations but there is a fee, Example India= .05/min.

I think the key would be to have other criusers that you want to talk with also have the Magic Jack, anywhere in the world they are you could call for free if they had one as well.

I use vonage at home and my phone will work, when my PC is not on as it also connects directly to the cable modem. With magic jack, I assume if the pc isn't on that the phone doesn't work, wifi or not. Is the voice mail reliable?

I love how it is only $20/yr for the service but EVERY call is free? marketing at it's finest just like cable companies getting people to switch to digital cable for the digital transition. the service sounds like a good deal though for that $20, just my $.02

Voicemail is perfect, quality is A+ and it is actually $12/month. They offer 5 years for $60 when you buy it. The computer does stay on, still goes to sleep mode but you can't shut it off completely. OK well now I am feeling like a sale person so that will be the end of my 2 cents.

So am I to understand that unless you pay an additional $12 a month you have no voice mail?

No no, Voicemail, caller ID, call waiting all included, and it gives the option... $20/year or buy 5 Years of service upfront for $12/year ($59.00) No other charges. The purchase price of $40 includes the first year of service.

Just got mine up and running,it sure feels weird having a regular phone on board(at the nav. station),but with no wires.Combine that with longe range wifi and you have quite a setup.

The one problem I did encounter when registering was that when I tried to choose a Wash. state area code it was removed from my choices, and couldn't get it to display again,so I chose a Calif. area code.If someone has to call you(from U.S .or Can.),just hang up and call them back.then its no charge.

OK, I understand Magic Jack is good for calling to and from the states. Can it do anything for me calling from Mexico to Indonesia?

My wife only has a cell phone with 3G that gets her to the internet. No Wifi. Skype signal is very iffy. Dropped calls are the norm if we go computer to computer. If I call via Skype to her cell phone it's better. Still drops the call way too much.

So I'm game if it will get calls thru for me from Mexico to Indonesia

Mingat, the answer is yes,I just checked the website. You have to prepay for international minutes, about .05cents/min. It works almost everywhere.I started using mine today with no problems.
