Looking for AIS transponder with VHF radio.

Greetings gentlemen,

Can anyone advise if there are any AIS transponders integral with VHF radios on the market. I need to replace my old Standard Horizon VHF radio, which is shot, and I wanted to see if I could get one with an AIS transponder built in. I didn't want the hassle of fishing another wire through the radar arch for a new antenna.

If there is nothing like that available yet, I would like a recommendation for a separate AIS transponder which I could use with a splitter. My other self-imposed requirement is that they are NMEA 2000, as I will be hooking the radio and AIS up to my Garmin 741xs plotter.

Thank you.

Joe

Re: Looking for AIS transponder with VHF radio.

some ais have internal vhf splitters. or you can buy them.

the ais will also need it's own gps ant. depending on brand and location you might be able to run it under the dash. otherwise you might be running another antenna up anyways.

the garmin 600 has a vhf splitter, is n2k. and the gps antenna is pretty good. have run it under dash before.

The Icom MA500TR will interface to some Icom VHF radios so you can make direct DSC calls. I have that feature but have not used it.

I think that is as close as you will get.

I DO think a transponder is well worth the price.
