Re: Long-Distance WiFi Device
The latest software did instal with no errors.
On Mac, do you need to install the software before plugging it in, same as on PC?
Is there some sort of special Mac trick, that a PC geek wouldn't know, that could have caused problems with the install?

Airport works fine...other than some of the signals being too weak.

Re: Long-Distance WiFi Device
There's about 700 posts in this thread advising readers to use Ubiquity radio's like the Bullet or Nanostation. These are Ethernet based and thus work on any computer that has an Ethernet port without needing any drivers.
USB connected radios are yesterdays tech and obsolete
Most here can't answer you because we all use Ubiquity.
ciao!
Nick.

Agreed, but we still have the alfa wifi gear in the arsenal. Shore side it's a lot more convenient than the Bullet hot wired to one of my 18 volt power tool batteries. But it's clear that I have done that too... guess I'm a junkie. Does get some looks though, heh heh!
And let's not forget that my words are reaching you from near the bottom of a ravioli can anchored off of Green Turtle Cay at the moment...

Has this forum evaluated 3G wifi units? I bought a 3G cell phone data only SIM card in Hong Kong. Plugged that into a Hua Hwei 3G wifi unit. Voila! Immediate wifi on the boat. Ventured only about 5 NM offshore so far with it but wife was watching youtube through it the while time.
Obviously limited to where you can get a 3G cell network, but that is increasingly common in the Asia region. Achieved speeds of 1 - 2 Mbs and learned that could be slower than normal as a lot of HKs bandwidth has been affected by damaged undersea cabling passing via Japan.

Re: Long-Distance WiFi Device
I'm waiting for Pasadena Networks to have them back in stock as I've enjoyed doing business with them. But I'm also only looking to buy a backup unit.
There's an ebay seller in Miami listing them but I have not done business with them before.

Re: Long-Distance WiFi Device
I was able to put one in my shopping cart at Data-Alliance but have not pulled the trigger. You might try with them.

I have a generic POE injector that runs directly of 12V very happily. There is no useful labeling on it. Ubiquiti ( ubnt.com ) sells POE's on their web site but I didn't get one of those. As I read the Bullet spec it is happy from 11V to 24V.

Auspicious,
Having used this antenna now, is there different one you would buy/try if you were doing it again? Is it too high of gain for a Sailboat?
Others have suggestions?
On a different note, I'm thinking of mounting this upside down (pointing downward) under my gimbaled radar which is on my mast. It would be out of the way there and may?? provide some stability to the antenna in terms of staying vertical??
Comments welcome,
Extemp.

Thanks (maybe ) We'll see....
I'll let you know how it turns out.
Warm Regards,
Extemp.

I went with the Antenna: Marine Waterproof 8dBi Omni-Directional Stainless Steel (20 inches long vs the 62 inches of the model you chose). I'll look later at other antenna's.
I also went with this PoE for MikroTik RouterBoards. Passive Power Over Ethernet and will wire it direct to my 12 volt system.
I'd like to take this opportunity to fore warn all of the stupid questions coming when I go to configure this unit.
Cheers,
Extemp.
