Link.com - Alternative for SPOT Locator ?

Hi,

If I read the specs correct, this service can be used as an alternative for SPOT device.

It uses EPIRB's "test" functionality. I believe it is a branch of, or a co-op with, ACR.

A very nice idea if you own a NEWISH EPIRB. As far as I know, the older 406 EPRIBs do not send a "test" message at all, the "test" function doesn't actually transmit, or if it does, it doesn't provide for a specific text string, and there's no way to modify what it does or says in the field.

Also no way to send regular bursts, like a SPOT would.

And I'd also be reluctant to burn $150 worth of EPRIB batteries sending "ET phone home" messages, when the main battery is so expensive and hard to obtain. Heck, for the cost of a spare battery I could buy the SPOT with service!

But since my ACR is not listed as able to work with this program...I'll just assume it can't. One less thing to worry about.<G>

Yes, both Spot and the new thing have some benefits vs. limitations (e.g. Spot is not a part of the GMDSS).

But it is good to see there are new things popping out in this field and going IMHO in good direction. (e.g. I posted elsewhere on the AIS - SART).

I think the Link.com is a fine alternative for someone who does not have an EPIRB yet, wants one and looks for 'Spot-like' functionality.
