LCD screen with external power supply

In order to operate the computer monitor with 12V I am looking for an LCD computer screen with external AC power supply (monitor with DC input). However it seems that they are dying out...
What are the models which are presently available?
Any recommendations?

Thanks for that link, Gord. Interesting products. I was looking for a 12V waterproof monitor to pair up with a Raspberry Pi running Open CPN. These almost fit the bill . . . except the 8" waterproof screen is $2000.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

Thanks for the heads-up.

I was taking my good ole time getting an LCD TV, to use for my computer on the boat, since up til lately, almost all of the tv's actually ran off about 12 volts or so(after the external transformer)..

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

not waterproof but there are samsung models which run on 12v.
Specs - LED S22A300B | Samsung Monitors

I have one onboard, though still plugged into the mains but I've heard of people running them straight off the boats 12v supply.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

I have a Samsung 21 inch BX 2231.

It's sold in some countries with a 12v brick and in some with a 14v brick, so its ideal to run direct from the boat battery.

Mine has been running for 12 months direct from the 12v supply without any problems.
Only 0.9A power consumption.

Here's a list of monitors currently available on the US market (02/10/13) for use with 12 volt systems. All use LED backlights. Most don't have VESA mounting options. They are roughly arranged by price and run from $70-$170. They are available from a variety of online suppliers and I've seen some carried at places like Best Buy or CompUSA.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

Thank you for all the answers - great. I like the Samsungs.
SAMSUNG A200 Series should be added to the list as well, seems to be better than the B150 series.

I will probably order the S19A200NW, it has even a VESA mounting.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

Oh, one more...
For navigation a 16:9 screen is may be not the best?
The alternative is the 5:4 screen Samsung S19A450BR with wall mount and external power adapter.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

If you're pairing up with a Raspberry Pi, you might even consider a 12v TV as long as it has a composite video input you can feed from the RPi's composite video out (yellow phono jack).

Plus, you can watch TV!

Sun-bright and waterproof monitors/TVs seem to be rare...

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

Haier HLC24XSL2 24" LCD TV/DCD LED backlight with external laptop-style AC power supply, runs happily directly on 12V. Full 1080, with HDMI, composite and VGA inputs. Note carefully the model number, others slightly different have fluorescent backlights and internal AC power supplies (with 19V for the backlight, not easily adapted for 12V even though the rest of the electronics are 12V - ask me know I know). This was the largest 12-V friendly screen I could find with built-in DVD (ease of use for the rest of the crew), and relatively inexpensive.

Pretty sure all the Insignia LCD's are also 12v before the power brick. They are available at all BestBuy's in US.

We're going to try to direct wire them too.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

I suggest stop looking for 12v monitors, and start looking for 12v TVs. There are lots of them for the RV/boat market and they're not expensive. Most have a VGA input so they can be used as a screen.
I have a 24 inch which was less than $200, and it's a screen, tv, DVR, plays movies off a USB stick, etc. It's LED LCD - bright, clear, low power usage and slim enough to be comfortably mounted on my bulkhead.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

I have a 12v dc unit branded GEM for my cockpit navigation and have been concerned about availability should it fail. There is another way as there are now USB driven monitors out there in Canada available through Tiger Direct. For an extended run length a powered USB cable between pc and monitor should do it.

Re: LCD screen with external power supply

I have finally found some Samsung models which have an external power supply! They work with 12-14 Volts.
I have purchased an LS19A450 and it works fine since 6 months on the boats 12 V supply.
