I have:
control unit box with a ac plug
modem with a ac plug
MTA with ac/dc adapter
switch box with ac/dc adapter
according to the instructions these items plug into a power strip which goes to 115/230 single phase ac power.

I am hoping a small inverter will work. System requires customer supplied phone and windows 7 laptop

Re: KVH V3... what have a done

power required is 500 watts max while on the net say streaming videos and the like. 5 amps for the system. I have not been able to find out the power required in "stand by" mode or just using email or waiting for incoming calls. Sounds like a lot of power.
So I have a 25# antenna, 30# mast and mounting hardware, 18# system modem & controls, 4 D battery and inverter.
Geez... one of the things I liked about this boat is that is was reasonably light for a cruiser

KVH tech support got back to me. 1000 watt inverter is more than ample.

Even if this a maximum it is a lot of power. That is more than 40A out of your batteries.

Well the satellites are pretty far away ... :-)

Further streaming video is equal to max power consumption. In most cases it will only burst of data transmitted - therefore average power consumption will be a lot less.

Re: KVH V3... what have a done

I'm curious as to what you ended up paying for the unit? I've been playing with the idea of getting high-speed internet offshore and this seems like a nice system to have; particularly the price-per-MB is finally low enough to be acceptable.

Also, does anyone know if the system will work while the boat is heeled over and moving about under sail or while rolling around an anchorage?

I think anyone contemplating this sort of system in a cruising yacht at anchor really needs to have answers on basics like average power consumption.
There are plenty of useful appliances that are not practical on a small cruising yacht because of their power consumption.
I don't know if this is the case here, but together with the laptop consumption it is not sounding promising.
If you cannot generate the power to run it its useless no matter how desirable, or functional it is.

Re: KVH V3... what have a done

noelex77 - I have 1000Ah of battery power. At 24V. Power consumption and supply is not my issue, but I don't want to spend money for a system which isn't fit for my (offshore cruising) purpose.

Addendum -- SORRY, I thought you were posting in response to my query. I won't delete the post but you can safely ignore my answer.

Re: KVH V3... what have a done

Since we are now doing more offshore cruising and plan 2 races offshore sat phone and internet will be a nice addition. The internet will allow me to stay in touch and track weather. The V3 does all that but the 1000 watt inverter, 4D battery, antenna mast, lap top and customer supplied phone were surprises. The KVH V3 system best price I found was $13,700. delivered. By the time its in the boat with the necessary gear to run it I will no doubt have 20K in the complete system. Oh well the crew will be happy they can stay connected.
