Just Want Marine Stationary GPS!

I have always just used a handheld GPS and have cruised for a few years with no problems, but I would like to upgrade to a station mounted model and cannot seem to find just a GPS. I can only find chart plotters and fish finders with GPS. Anybody fill me in on a simple marine fixed mount gps that is good?
Thanks

Not sure what it is you're looking for when you say GPS only and not a chartplotter. Do you mean you want a unit that only give a lat/lon readout with no graphic display showing the land and water? If that is the case it seems like this would be of very limited use in the cockpit since you would need to plot the lat/lon on a paper chart to see your position.

If your objection to the chartplotter is just that they can show depth, speed and other data, these are usually available as options and you don't have to buy the transducers for these functions so can use the chartplotter to only show your GPS position graphically.

There are Garmin and Furuno units of the type you want.

Also, a Ray instrument can show lat long etc. possibly route too - look up their newest i70 or similar earlier models.

I think this is the last of that breed of GPS: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=148&pID=70461

There ya go. $299 US. Garmin
If you search ebay for Garmin 128 or 126 you might get a good second hand one cheap as well.

And they can be very useful, and consume a bucket load less power than a plotter.

Bloody hell three responses in the time it took to type the link!

We have a Furuno GP-32 which would fulfill your requirements. We like it because
  • standalone, no need for the power-hungry chartplotter to run
  • has a simple graphic, track, and one can set an anchor alarm
  • very low power draw, it is on all the time

Chartplotters ARE GPS's. They do what a handheld does, only more easily. I have a 441, the smallest one, and it's quite adequate for my needs. However, I have a wheel boat, and a friend made a Lexan stand for it to go over the compass (you must twist cables to make sure the electrical does not interfere with your compass). If you mount it far away from the wheel it will be hard to use.

A link to sitex and furuno unit that do just what you want.

GPS Fixed Mount

I like the furuno myself.

And I do believe we're in the minority navigating by numbers rather than by pictures.

+3, on the ocean, the picture on the chartplotter gets rather boring. Except for the AIS targets, and they could be seen on Standard Horizon Matrix VHF (which I would buy next time).

Re: Just Want Marine Stationary GPS!

I get all this from a Garmin GPSMap 76, plus it's connected to my autopilot so it navigates to a track as well. It always has a 3D Differential signal (from Canada to Mexico) even though it's mounted under a hard bimini. It runs off the boat's 12V system and I keep a second one as a backup - why not use a handheld?

Cheers.
