I worked 2 years as a field technitian on JRC equipment and although there was (is) a rather slim product range for leasure craft, I always felt that the support and knowledge was slim to nothing. This is a really good initiative and should be followed by more manufacturers. Welcome!

I've a quick question about my 1500 MKII radar.

I have it connected to a Brookhouse multiplexer so it gets NMEA info from the GPS, instruments and PC.

The display of waypoint info (bearing, distance and time to wpt) comes and goes every 10-20 seconds. It seems like it might need to be fed the NMEA sentences more frequently than it currently gets them to continuously display them - same is true of the on-screen "lollipop" waypoint.

It does continuously display the course heading, speed and lat/long so it doesn't seem to be a wiring issue.

It's more of a nuisance than a problem, but I thought I'd avail of your generous offer!

The 1500 works great, I don't know why anyone would spend 50% more to get an equivalent Raymarine or Furuno.

Do you have any way of telling me what NMEA sentences are coming from your GPS?

The R1500 will accept RMA, RMB, RMC, GLL,GTD, VTG, BWC sentences.

The BWC is the sentence that contains bearing and distance to waypoint.

It is possible that you GPS may be programmable to output different sentences at each transmission interval. Maybe it is outputting all those sentences, but it only outputs BWC every other burst.

Another thought is that if the GPS is outputting all those sentences every burst, but the baud rate is too high, it may chop some data off every once in a while.

Let me know what sentences your GPS is outputting and what the baud rate is.

Islander: that behavior is often caused by two different active waypoints being transmitted through the system, of which one is very far away or just lat/long 0/0. The display will cycle the two in that case.

Same happens with two GPS's that have slightly different readings... you see the position cycling.

I solved this with a programmable multiplexer (shipmodul.com) where you can set port priorities.

The best way to find this is by monitoring the stream coming from the mux on a PC.

JRC Support: PC puts out APB, BWC, GLL, HSC, RMB, XTE. Com port is 4, rate is 4800, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.

Jedi: The display alternates between blank and the correct info. As it is blank also when there is no active waypoint, I think it just "forgets" the info between transmissions? I'll capture the output stream next time I'm at the boat and check for duplicate HSC's etc., but I don't think that is the problem.

Next time you are on the boat, try and get a hypertermial capture of the data string. It is possible that there is some corruption with the data string on that sentence. If you could capture a few minutes worth of it and send it to me at marineservice"at"jrcamerica.com I would appreciate it.

My guess is that the PC puts out too many sentences. Try shutting them off and then turn them back on one at a time, using only the ones listed above.

I've got an old JRC 1980s radar which is going good still & will keep it as long as I can. I like the idea that so far I can keep it going as it has few parts that can't be got anywhere.
