Usually, as soon as the wind starts to blow hard enough to make any headway by sail, the fog starts breaking up and getting thinner so it's not long before you no longer need radar to see what's out there. That's not an ironclad rule and certainly there are other conditions when radar us useful while actually sailing, but I find that most of the time when I really need radar for an extended period of time, my engine is running. Also, as you mentioned, the new radars use much less power than older ones did.
Also, many units support timed transmit where the system will remain in standby for a specified time and then transmit a specified number of scans. Helps conserve energy in situations where you dont need continuous RADAR.

I am especially interested in sailboat users.

I moved my screen from below to the cockpit. Great improvement.

Called "Watchman" mode, at least on the Furuno. Excellent feature.

That would be illegal and somewhat stupid. The law says someone has to be on watch and some things don't show up on radar.

As for needing radar, many boats don't have radar and some have it only to locate birds (which means fish are nearby).

The need for radar depends on where, when and how you boat. If you often boat at night or in areas with heavy fog, having radar would be a good choice.

If you seldom or never boat at night and boat in an area where fog is uncommon (or stay in port if there's heavy fog or rain), then radar would be more of a "nice thing to have" but not a necessity.

I don't have radar and have never felt unsafe for not having it. That's my personal situation.

Re: Is radar like the extinct typewriter?

I am amazed by some comments on this thread. I think I have commented before, but cannot bother to search.

We have radar. We did not purchase it, it was on the boat when we purchased it.

We live in an area where fog is extremely rare on the ocean.

However, in the past 2.5 years since we purchased the boat, we have used the radar many times. When??

1. Exiting ports before sunrise (lots of times).
2. Fog (twice)
3. Entering ports after sunset (a few times)
