Just in case you missed my question to you in post #287:

Question: How does your $79 GPS, compass and chart alert you to other vessels and obstacles not marked on the chart when your eyes fail you in foggy, gale force, stormy, rainy and night time conditions?

Or do you simply "prefer to get blindsided by them and just deal with it when it happens?".

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. A $79 GPS, compass and chart do not alert me to other vessels. Visual observation deals with that remedial task. Collision would require failure of both parties watch keeping. The risks of that are so slight that I don't even give it second thought. Do you have the same phobia with driving and flying? There is help for those conditions.

You couldn't be more wrong IMHO, and you should be making collision avoidance your priority. I can't remember a single day on the water where we were not required to take evasive action when finding ourselves on a collision course or near collision course with another vessel, along the coast and out at sea during passagemaking.

And.... you still haven't addressed the question regarding collision avoidance during times of low to no visibility such as fog, rain, wind driven rain, darkness at night etc. How is your $79 GPS, compass and paper chart going to solve this issue?

Or, do you expect the other vessels, stationary objects, rocks, breakwaters etc. to simply get out of your way?

Navigation lights do shed a lot of light on the issue. Stationary objects, rocks, breakwaters, etc are charted to my satisfaction. Operating my vessel just isn't the problem you seem intent on making it. I don't remember ever taking evasive action to prevent a collision but then again when driving my Tundra I just turn on the blinker and start easing over. Anyone in the way cowers out of the way.

I like to sail on a starboard tack at night or in poor visibility.

Me too...

When the weather gets bad and visibilty is greatly reduced, they expect objects to get out of their way including stationary objects like breakwaters, rocks and jetties and commercial boats including fishing boats.

Their "blinker is on," get out of their way. Awesome.

Wow.... just wow. That's going to work out just great someday in the fog when you and your Catalina 22 meet up with a freighter. Good luck.

We are just having a little fun.
When they gain a little more experience they won't need a full array of electronics to get from one side of the harbor to the other. Until then, I hope they use all available resources.
