Is it Worth it to Install a New Autohelm ST6000 ?

Hi,
A friend is selling me and old but unused st6000 autopilot, for $300. Everything is in the original packaging, never installed. Complete system with display, linear drive, rudder sensor, wind vane, compass, control box, manuals, etc...
What I like o that it has NEMA so I can hook it up with my garmin chartplotter.
I'm using Raymarine wheel pilot st4000+, but will like a stronger below deck pilot.
My question is if is worth it to buy such old unit, even if is brand new?????
How good is this system???
Is the price ok???

Heck yeah! $300 for the linear drive is worth it right there.

Much safer to go with this plan. I will buy it and test it for you. Then if it fails you are ahead of the game $300. If it works out I will give you a recommendation on how well it works and what I think a fair value is.

I had a 6000 on my last boat, it worked flawlessly.

That is a great deal. The 6000 I just removed was older and no NMEA support at all.

I guess I'm going for it! Just going to make sure that is NMEA compatible. I read it on an online manual from raymarine, but now memelet got me thinking....

If it comes with its own wind vane (for wind direction) it probably does not support NMEA. Mine didn't have the wind vane when I got the boat, but the manual showed how to hook it up. Without the wind vane there is no steer to wind.

But hey, for $300... My new simrad system cost me thousands.

Definitely go for it. Raymarine sells a little black box that talks to the Garmin plotter through the course computer.

Yeah, for years things said NMEA compatible, but the differnt brands wouldnt talk to each other correctly. At that price not sure I would care. But if it doesnt work out, Send it to me!

Re: Is it Worth it to Install a New Autohelm ST6000 ?

I have an Autohelm 6000 whose control unit is no longer working. Is an Autohelm ST6000 the same thing? If so someone has a never used one and I need to know if I can switch my old one out and replace it with this new one. The picture of the ST6000 looks different than my control unit but they are the same size. The ST6000 is flush mounted while the 6000 is attached with Velcro. No problem with a different mounting if the electronics are compatible. Are the the same so I can splice the new control unit in to the wiring form my old unit?

Be very carefull with this plan! The control unit must send the proper signals to the version of the autohelm computer already installed. There are differences as adhancements were added, and Autohelm was changed to Raymarine.

Re: Is it Worth it to Install a New Autohelm ST6000 ?

I tried to interface st6000 with my 6000, no way I could make it work, not the same number of wires and no nema on 6000. I am so frustrated because my old 6000 is so close to working. so I will get a x10 tomorrow, my question is the rudder feed back horn the same. Will go sail one more time to test it and then buy a new one. I would put a st6000 on no problem.
