Iridium Extreme - Battery Death

Has anyone else had the Li-ion battery in their Iridium Extreme (9575) go totally dead? I mean won't-take-a-charge dead?

OK, I'm a slow learner, but I stow the phone away for a year and a half between my Hawaii trips, and this is two times that the battery has needed to be replaced. At $100+ a shot that's a bit annoying. The older Iridium phones with NiCd batteries could handle the long layover, and could be recharged with no apparent loss in capacity. This new Li-ion battery apparently needs regular recharging. Should I just leave the damn phone on the charger 24/7/365?
