Indeed, and Splashtop has streamers for, dare I write the word, Windows too.

The point with the MacMini is that it, like MacBookPro's, has the efficient Intel laptop-components inside plus has a conformal coating which makes it endure the marine environment so much better. I have used 1 miniITX and two PicoITX systems over the years and then got the MacMini with which I'm still stuck as it does not die.

p.s. You can make a standard Windows system out of a MacMini by formatting the hard-drive and only installing Windows. Use the "BootCamp" disk as the Windows driver disk and all will work just like any other Intel system, just higher build quality. I don't advocate that because I consider Windows the biggest computer virus that exists, so it's just a theory that I happened to verify by testing it myself.

Nick.

Re: IPad vs tablet vs laptop vs chartplotter

Our preference for plotters (underway and planning):

1. Primary for cockpit underway is chartplotter (aka "use the tool made for the job"..)

2. Cockpit Backup for chartplotter is the iPad using Navionics (vector charts). Not impressed by Garmin BlueChart but is a software backup I guess...

3. Backup for iPad is our iPhones, same programs. We have three iPhones onboard. Better for crappy conditions- can keep them in a pocket until needed for a quick look.

4. Primary for nav station planning is laptop with OpenCPN. Also have a GPS hockeypuck so can also use as plotter backup. Also use Google Earth and Active Captain for planning.

5. Then comes the paper chartbook and handheld garmin.

6. Then comes the sun

We didn't set out to have so much redundancy, it just worked out that way...

Frank

Yeah but the ipad itself is lacking in soooo many other areas.
Expandable storage slot
HDMI port
GPS
Waterproof to name a few.

Yeah, I think I just talked myself into the pantech

You are misinformed. The iPad is way ahead. It does not use obsolete tech like HDMI ports because it does wireless Airplay. It has combined GLONASS+GPS instead of just GPS etc... all next generation and outperforming your points.

Waterproof? Are you going to take it swimming?

Than you should by all means get a pantech.

My iPad3 has never needed an Expandable storage slot.
32gig, is plenty for all my nav. apps and boat manuals
Have never needed a HDMI port
My built in GPS works great
They make water proof cases, but have never needed that in the last 3 years.
It just works, no viruses it just works, no fuss

wireless Airplay.... how does that work in hotel rooms when I travel?
Every hotel room I stay in has a TV with HDMI ports but I have never seen one with apple tv or some "special" apple device that needs purchasing as an extra

GLONASS+GPS... irrelevant really, normal gps is more than good enough and land based I have mobile towers and wifi to "assist" the satellites.

Swimming, no
Wet , most probably, boats float on it and it falls out of the sky as well.
Drinks can also get spilt as happened several weeks back with a friends iphone, (spark sputter spark spark)

So a 32GB micro sim costs $19 but to get that in an ipad costs an extra $150?

And what about the 500gb of extra movies etc that I travel with on a portable drive?
How do you go plugging that in?

Who told you that iPad has no GPS? And that assisted GPS you mention was invented by Apple, LMAO

Hotel rooms? Aboard your boat? You really lost me there

pirate Re: IPad vs tablet vs laptop vs chartplotter

I like the idea of a cheap 80 euro chinese tablet.. 8GB, 7inch screen, WiFi,camera/video rec.. fits in a jacket pocket.. see through zip-lock bag and ready to boogie.. would keep my notebook for down below passage planning etc.. perfect for my needs.

I'm one of these really clever guys who has figured out that tablets can be used in more than one place

I imagine you apple guys would have to buy yet another techy device to achieve such a feat

Correct, that is built in to androids, so that they can get twice as many viruses in more than one place.
You may really be over thinking this. We use iPads on the boat, hotel, car, work & home and I have never had any of the issues your having with your android.

Never even think about the issues yor having.

Several years a 'droid user and never, I REPEAT never, have I had one of these viruses apple users speak of and I haven't heard of any of my mates having issues either.
Why is that?

add: a recent article about these apparently common place viruses apple users claim are prevelant

But even this level of caution may not be enough to fully protect you. Malware has been known to slip through the cracks of all app stores. There have been reports of malicious software showing up in the Google Play Store as well as in Apple's well-protected iTunes App store. So even if you find an app you want to download in one of these stores, you should check out the source and vendor of the app you are installing before downloading it onto your phone.

Rosenblatt also recommends that anyone with a smartphone download a security app to their device. Apps from Lookout, Avast or AVG are all good options for Android security, he said. These apps will scan applications when you install them to make sure they are not known malware or try to do things on your phone that would be considered characteristics of malware
I use AVG, and its free

These are your list of issues. No iPad user ever mentions these, just you

Expandable storage slot
HDMI port
GPS

And like I said, for me they ARE NOT an issue
I bought an android device

you are only meaning the TWO people in this thread, not the countless others in the world who do have issues and who the article was written for.

Thanks for the clarification.
