I've had more than one mobile device water-logged while residing in a dry-bag that didn't seal properly.
Lifeproof case for iPad.

IPad Air Lifeproof case water test. Try this with a traditional helm based Chartplotter.

Here's an example of the app software available absolutely free from Nobeltec. The complete Mediterranean set of charts cost only $150.

A different model case, the ones we use don't have the speaker ports. The model you show in the video is for the iPad 1st generation and is not guaranteed for submersion. The newer Lifeproof models for iPad Air are guaranteed for 2 meter (6ft) submersion and along with an AppleCare plan + via Apple computer, all I need to do over the first two years should there be any issue regarding water damage or breakage due to a drop is return it to an Apple Store...... The iPad is replaced with a new model for only $49.

It's also highly likely the individual with the failed case had a slightly bent iPad, which then didn't make a good seal with the case. He also may not have followed the directions properly on how to insert his iPad into the Lifeproof case, which involves a rubber gasket. We don't know what circumstances preceded the fail, how he took care of his things or how far under the iPad was submerged. If the guy dropped in into 15ft of water... Of course the case would fail.... As would your helm mounted Chartplotter if your boat sank.

We have AppleCare on each iPad, and haven't needed to use it in over 5 years and 10 months of use.... half of which took place on our boat. We don't drop things, or crash into our binnacle (like some folks seen to do).

Nice try.

Not sure why you keep obsessively posting on this thread intended to provide CF members with information regarding iPad cases and mounts... I'm a satisfied iPad user as are many other CF members. Has the Apple company done you wrong in the past or something? I just don't understand your negative obsession with this thread.

I'm positive that "A proper MFD is an excellent primary navigation tool".

My participation in this thread is to communicate why your recommendation to use an iPad as a primary navigation tool instead of an MFD, is a bad idea.

I hope you don't persuade someone to follow your advice, have a failure, land on rocks, and loose their boat, or worse.

As I say to boaters with atrocious electrical wiring and propane system installations, "Just because it hasn't burned to the waterline yet, doesn't make it safe; there's always tomorrow."

Just because you have been lucky not to have a catastrophe yet, doesn't mean you won't, and if you do, then what will your position be?

I care about this subject and other boaters enough to be as persistent as you.

Rod,

Your close-minded, negative obsession has ruined this thread.

Nice work.

I can't imagine just how difficult it would be to work with a marine service contractor as steadfast, opinionated and obsessive as you seem to be.

Over and out of here.

Sorry if I crossed the line.

I was trying to use proportional response.

Re: iPad Case and Mount Options

Rod you have crossed the line since your first post in this thread. How would you feel if we decide that we must prevent cruisers doing what you advise and ending up on the reefs or rocks because of your opinion that view blocking pods with electronic gadgets are the way to go.

Just because you have been lucky not to have a catastrophe yet, doesn't mean you won't, and if you do, then what will your position be?

Your "care" seems not to be about other boaters as much as about you selling them more gadgets.

Steve,

Here's a screenshot of the Nobeltec app per our conversation.

Re: iPad Case and Mount Options

Steve,

Here's a screenshot of the same harbor using INavx. Navionics uses the same set of charts, so the screenshot would be very similar. I hope this helps you to choose. Each app has advantages. Nobeltec provides an advanced flyover look at harbors and a superior highway view while underway. INavx is better during docking or anchoring because of the increased number of depth markings.

Guys, your being rediculousy personal with all of this 'crossing the line' crap and it is getting unfairly low with accusations of personal gain. How about just accepting you have different opinions without the personal stuff coming into it.

Mounting any winch, let alone an electric winch, that close to a compass is very poor practice.

When the winch was energized, did it feel like you were in the Bermuda triangle. ;-)

This is why I get a little crazy some times over installation practices.

Someone should have given the installer's head a shake.
