Re: Intro to SSB, up-to-date Equipment

Check out Dockside radio. Lots of useful info, plus he sells a do it yourself icom 802 kit complete with instructions and everything you need to install. I just did it on my 40 ft. boat and it worked perfectly. He includes a free hour of telephone troubleshooting with the purchase if you need it.

Re: Intro to SSB, up-to-date Equipment

Given the same antenna / tuner quality, the boat with better HF ground wins hands down. No reason to get a good transceiver if one is not going to get the best ground. IMHO

So, in fact, it is quite a kit: skills, transceiver, ground, tuner, antenna, propagation, certification ...

Beautiful part of maritime tradition, like a sextant, a teak deck and a set of code flags. They say I spoke Morse before I could walk. ;-)
