Interphase Forward Looking Depth Sounder Experience

We have had an older Interphase fwd looking depth sounder (Echoscan series) that has not always had the best performance. I am looking for someone that had one for a while and their experience with it.

I was able to obtain a new transduce from Interphase (bought by Garmin and "phased out") to replace the older broken one when we haul out in a week.

Lately, however, I have been also thinking of removing the unit altogether given it's so-so performance over the past few years.

Any ideas or experiences would be really appreciated!

Re: Interphase Forward Looking Depth Sounder Experience

I had an early unit with similar poor experience. Let it go with the last boat.

I suspect it works better with hard bottom types. My use was all in the Gulf of Mexico (mostly mud/sand) and it was underwhelming. Forward range and detail drops significantly as water depth decreases...right when you need to most.

Anyone have feedback on newer units?

Thanks for the reply belizesailor - apparently Interphase/ Garmin is not putting out any more units (as of last year).

Their MarkII and Mark III series were much more expensive but don't know about the performance...

That should be a sign. If theely were great, and sold well, then they would not discontinue them.

Re: Interphase Forward Looking Depth Sounder Experience

I'm not familiar with the Interphase model that you mention. I have had Interphase Probe sonars since 1996... one on each of my two cruising boats, and find them very useful.

I have posted several longer accounts of their strong and weak points here on CF, and don't wish to repeat myself. If you are interested, the custom search should ferret them out for you.

I have no idea why they were discontinued, but suspect that their technology was somewhat dated. Perhaps a better new design is in the offing... that would surely be welcome!

Re: Interphase Forward Looking Depth Sounder Experience

We have the Interphase Outlook forward looking sonar. So far our experience with it is good, but sometimes, it does give funny readings.
