Re: Internet Offshore

I would personally invest in a long distance WI-FI system which can cover you up to 5 nm along the coast.

The best way is to use the GE2KAP (free) software to browse and convert maplets of all the ports you intend to visit. They will then be available to you in your laptop nav prog. at any time.

Re: Internet Offshore

I do not think there are many BGAN units for offshore. It is a directional system. Good in the marina perhaps.

Re: Internet Offshore

Thank you all - with your help, and a quick call to an IT friend, I was able to archive the files needed. essentially you simply use GE for the areas and in the detail you are looking for and then copy the cahed files into another director for future use when you can simply copy them back to the GE directory for it to use. Not too bad on the techno weenie scale and one hell of a lot cheaper than having full time internet.

Re: Internet Offshore

Quiet storm..

Although the possibilities exist to fill up the GE cache before departure,it is far too easy to overwrite if you're not careful. Far better then to display the required port area in GE,save it,activate GE2KAP and hey presto.. you have a navigable .kap map.

Re: Internet Offshore

If wifi is in the mix you quite simply are not "offshore."

Re: Internet Offshore

I think most intelligent sailors understand the meaning of the term 'off-shore' in the context of this thread. 5 miles ought to qualify in any case.

With all due respect Tore, in my mind five miles is coastal not offshore.

I'd like to think I am intelligent so not every intelligent sailor agrees with your definition of offshore.

At present the state of the art is really the fleetbroadband service from Inmarsat. FB150 provides symmetrical 150kbps. In a 4k small antenna , fully stabilised. But at $10 a meg it's pricey

I've posted this a few times before. If you are going to rely on this sort of equipment list for life and/or death situations, make sure you have backups, the backups have backups, and the backedup backups have an alternative plan. One good knock on the old PC and you could find yourself and your family in a world of hurt.
I do this for a living and it's not a question of IF your laptop will die, it's WHEN.

OFFSHORE (˘fsh˘r)
The relatively flat, irregularly shaped zone that extends outward from the breaker zone to the edge of the continental shelf. The water depth in this area is usually at least 10 m (33 ft). The offshore is continually submerged.

Re: Internet Offshore

on west coast, if you are cruising only 5 mi offshore, then you are shipwrecked.
