If you had used NMEA 183 right from the plotter, you would have lost the extra nmea port available with the box (important only should you have more NMEA 183 devices onboard).

This is because the Vesper device offers just one NMEA 183 port (so once taken up by Ray, you run out of NMEA 183 options).

With the box in between you get one extra NMEA 183 channel. Except for fast data as the box does not interface 38400 NMEA 183. No issue as the only fast data you have is already incorporated in the AIS device.

This fact gave us a headache when we attempted (and failed) to interface a fast gps sensor via the box.

So, how you wired things is probably the optimum method given your hardware.
