Icom801 v 802

Just about to buy and install a Icom 802 ssb, then read a report on the 801E. Apart from the price they spec up pretty much the same, so why is the 802 not EU approved. Any advise, pros & cons, thanks, barrenjoey.

Because the 802 has a far higher wattage transmit power than the depowered Australian version 801.

801: 125W (PEP) of output power

802: 150W (PEP) of powerful output

Additionally, I understand the 802 has access to a wider radio spectrum than the EU approved set.

Really a non-issue. Nobody on the receiving end could tell if you switched from 125w to 150w. In fact, you would have to quadruple your power output to bring a receiving stations S-meter up by one unit. If you just doubled your output, a person with a good ear on the receiving end might detect just a slight improvement in your signal.

Oh, ok. Wouldn't affect long range and pactor modem transmition?

Not at all. As Eric said, the difference between 125W PEP and 150W PEP is insignificant, for all practical purposes.
