It's stored in non-volatile memory in the "main unit", the big black box part, as you wrote...(although not sure why you'd need to know that...

And, no, it is not hard to reset, and is easily done by you, for free, in just one minute....with just a few key strokes from the front panel....
The exact procedure is explained on page 15 of the M-802 manual (first page of chapter 6)....
But, be aware that you can only re-program the MMSI# twice (via this front-panel / user program method)....

Should you need to reprogram it more than twice, you will need an
Icom dealer, or the programming/cloning
software and programming cable...as it is done thru this software, NOT by any internal reset....(best to keep your fingers out of the radio!!)
