Lightbulb Icom M710 Users Group

I have been looking for a good community of folks who use the M710 and couldn't find one... so I created a Yahoo Group ...
ICM710 : Icom ICM710 Users Group

Right now I'm the only member, but I hope that will change quickly. ;-)

I figured this would be of interest to all here so I apologize if the moderators feel it's off topic.

Thanks a lot!
BTW... La Paz is beautiful today! ;-)

Re: Icom M710 Users Group

Hi Patrick! I just joined your group, but I was wondering what topics might interest you (and others). Here are some points of interest for me:

1) Headphone jack -- The 710-RT has no headphone jack. I ended up wiring a potentiometer (volume control) and jack to the external speaker wires, and mounting these next to the radio head. It works really well, but I shouldn't have had to roll my own.

2) Headset -- I want a headset with a boom mic. Icom used to have an optional "telephone handset" that could plug into the mic jack, but they no longer have this available, and I wouldn't want one anyway. I'm going to be evaluating some cheap "gamer" headsets, once I find some spare mic plugs. I need to compare the Icom microphone sensitivity with the headset boom mics, as they may not have the necessary output. The gamer headsets don't have the acoustic earphone isolation I would like, but they might be good enough. Otherwise I will be looking at adapting a ham or aircraft-style headset (much more expensive).

3) Has anyone used the 710 for ham radio and *not* done the "quick transmit frequency programming" firmware mod? It's still nowhere as nice for ham use as would be a true ham rig, or the newer Icom marine radios, but it works well enough for me.

Awesome stuff Paul! Can't wait to hear about that custom headphone setup on the group!

Re: Icom M710 Users Group

I purchased a M710 for my sailing catamaran but have decided not to use it. I have all the related equipment, etc. for installation plus lots of how-to books and manuals.

I don't know how much to ask for it, nor do I know the best way to market it. Any help (suggestions) would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I like the idea of free ads, but I understand that paying for an ad may be the best in the end.

Thanks. Dan

Re: Icom M710 Users Group

I've had an ICOM 710-RT for many years. Good solid rig.

Also, I opened up the user memory locations so TX freq can be stored (what a dumb idea to disable in the first place). Should still be posts here on CF on that subject. Will look them up and post link here and on the yahoo group.

Update: Here's the ICOM 710 programming thread:

Icom 710RT Cloning / Programming Software.

I also have all the software you need to do this.
