Hi Patrick! I just joined your group, but I was wondering what topics might interest you (and others). Here are some points of interest for me:
1) Headphone jack -- The 710-RT has no headphone jack. I ended up wiring
a potentiometer (volume control) and jack to the external speaker wires, and mounting these next to the radio head
. It works really well, but I shouldn't have had to roll my own.
2) Headset -- I want a headset with a boom mic. Icom
used to have an optional "telephone handset" that could plug
into the mic jack, but they no longer have this available, and I wouldn't want one anyway. I'm going to be evaluating some cheap
"gamer" headsets, once I find some spare mic plugs. I need to compare the Icom
microphone sensitivity with the headset boom mics, as they may not have the necessary output. The gamer headsets don't have the acoustic earphone isolation I would like, but they might be good enough. Otherwise I will be looking at adapting a ham or aircraft-style headset (much more expensive).
3) Has anyone used the 710 for ham radio
and *not* done the "quick transmit frequency programming" firmware mod? It's still nowhere as nice for ham use as would be a true ham rig, or the newer Icom marine
radios, but it works well enough for me.
