How to Purchase a C.A.R.D Radar Detector ?

After many hours of old Forum snooping. I have decided to purchase and instal a CARD radar detecting system. I looked on-line and couldnt find anyone selling them so I phoned a few marine and electronic dealers- no luck. anyone have any leads? Are they still available? Thanks in advance.

Is not C.A.R.D. quite expensive, now AIS is much less and will identify most boats you are concerned about.

Re: How to Purchase a C.A.R.D Radar Detector ?

Well, actually, you don't need it anymore. We recently sold our CARD unit. Our replacement was in 2 parts: the Sea-Me active radar reflector (which also detects but without showing bearing to target) and AIS, in addition to our own radar.

When the Sea-Me beeps, you look on AIS to see who/where it is. If there's nothing, you switch on radar to find it.

The whole radar detection thing is only usable with off shore passages because it will be beeping full time when coastal, even in remote parts.

ciao!
Nick.

Nick -
I was reading somewhere that CARD doesn't detect the new type of radar. Have you heard anything about that? Wonder if that also applies to the Sea-me units?

CARD is an outdated waste of time. There are better Sea-me or CARD will detect the output from FMCW type radars such as Simrads 3/4G units. This is because they don't use radar frequencies.

No, don't worry about that.

Do you have radar? AIS? receive or transponder? Just looking at your options...

I do think that the Sea-Me is much better because it will 1) give you warning a radar is near and 2) makes sure that this near radar will see you and it's ARPA will designate you as a target and track you, all fully automatic. It will sound warnings when needed etc.

That's the best you can do on that front. AIS transponder is the next thing and this will also show you where the target is that the Sea-Me was beeping about.

cheers,
Nick

Earlier this year I talked to a singlehander, from Estonia of all places. He had a Hanse 44 with all the bells and whistles.Despite having radar and AIS he said his radar detector was very useful and important to him.

I would look at MerVeille first.

Page 1

I am not sure CARD detects both frequencies.
