Re: How to access chart plotter and reconnect cable?

My boat came with quite a few "legacy" cables and wires that did not go to anything that was still operating on the boat. You may have been so blessed. Make sure that cable actually goes to something before taking things apart.

You may also need a SeaTalk converter This device connects older SeaTalk instruments to convert to SeaTalk ng or NMEA 2000

good idea. My boat was so blessed when I purchased it. The PO didn't even charge extra for it.

Hauled away two large trash bags of old wires during the initial cleanup.

Re: How to access chart plotter and reconnect cable?

Ripping out the old legacy Garmin/NEXUS/Alpha wiring on my boat was both cathartic and exhausting. Literally seemed like a mile of wire piled on the dock. I'm all NMEA 2000 now and it's just amazing. Simple, accessible, easy to troubleshoot, easy to fix.

When it comes to cables and plugs, remember if you have decent soldering skills you don't have to buy a whole new long cable if you just need a new plug. Buy a short cable and splice in the plug to the old one. There are probably field connectors too, but putting those on can be a bit like performing brain surgery.

As far as the security screws on Navpods, I have no argument with them. If they help to deter theft by only 20%, that's OK with me. Put it this way. If they put you off because you have to find the tool, and it's your boat, then it's working as intended lol.
