Re: How long can you leave a depth sounder on?

As others have said...relax. An instrument like that uses very little power, and can be left on indefinitely. If you have a charger running, solar or wind, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

'But I think I accidentally left it on when I left my boat,"
That's why all that stuff, electronics, instruments, cabin lights, all belongs on the Big Red Switch and you always kill that when you go off the boat.

Umm, look, a microwave oven utilizes (would you believe) microwave electromagnetic radiation. That stuff has known detrimental effects upon human tissue. MIcrowave ovens have shielding which contains the energy inside the box. thus you can indeed stand next to one without harm to you or your gonads. Should you remove your gonads and place them inside the oven, they could be cooked, but would not glow even then. I suppose that being a bachelor you might make such an error of judgement...

The depth sounder emits pulses of acoustic energy of a frequency too high for the human ear to respond to. The coupling between the transducer and a nearby person both being in the air is very poor. There simply is no hazard to a yard worker, none, zilch.

Re: How long can you leave a depth sounder on?

As Jim points out electromagnetic (microwave) radiation and ultrasonic vibrations are two totally different things.

Basically, depth sounder "pings" are just like dolphin clicks. (Although dolphin clicks are around the 50kHz range and sounders use both 50kHz and 200kHz - the latter are above the hearing range of dolphins)
