hfterm and Winmor Instead of Pactor Modem

I am installing a Linux (UBUNTU) based computer on TASHTEGO and I am trying to figure a way to send/receive e-mail without buying a PACTOR modem which will cost as much as the SSB radio. Linux is working on a program called "hfterm" which will use the sound card in the computer to communicate directly with the radio without a PACTOR modem. The ARRL is developing WINMOR to do the same thing although I'm not sure it has been ported to Linux yet. Anybody out there with any experience with these two protocols/programs? Seems like an efficient and money saving way to save the $1250 or so it costs for a PACTOR II MODEM / TNC.

WINMOR is effective, but until it is more widely deployed by RMS stations, your ability to make a contact at any given moment will be highly variable. Eventually there will certainly be a Linux implementation, but that isn't the focus of the developers at this point.

My understanding of Winmor is that it is still in the testing phase before it is integrated with Airmail.
As to your original question, not sure on the Linux. I use a Buxcomm Rascal soundcard interface to connect to my HF radio. As SoonerSailor said, there will certainly be a Linux version at some point. Who knows when.

By the way, the ARRL is not developing WINMOR. It is an independent effort by a group of hams who may (or may not) be members of the ARRL. The ARRL, as an organization, doesn't do this kind of development itself.

WINMOR

You are quite right, the WINMOR program is being developed by winlink2000 although ARRL is apparently helping with the testing.
