HF radio interference to lights etc

While playing around with my HF radio I was moving between stations and the solar panel booster started to click on and off as well as the LED lights in one room started to come on and off even though they were switched off at the wall. Has anyone experienced this sort of electrical interference. The radio is a ICOM IC-706MKIIG HF/VHF/UHF Transceiver.

Re: HF radio interference to lights etc

For any current going out your antenna, and equivalent amount has to return via the counterpoise/ground. RF currents will have the greatest flow where the resistance is lowest, be that house wiring, control cables or whatever. These kinds of irksome ground currents can be minimized with a good antenna system ground. You may or may not be able to eliminate them without some work, however. You will also find that how troublesome this is will depend on the frequency you transmit on.

This condition can be as easy to cure as installing some ferrite chokes on the antenna lead out of your 706 and possibly not the B+ and B- to the affected DC loads. See Home - Palomar Engineers®
