Help needed AIRMAIL setup for EU ICOM M700/F SSB

Hi Folks

I would appreciate some information regarding Airmail settings.

My neighbors (A very nice French couple) already have a Icom IM-M700/F SSB and a Pactor PTC-IIex modem which was on the boat when they bought it.

The previous owner was a French man who worked for the French rescue services so they are sure the radio/modem was used.

I am helping them install Airmail and have a question on the settings:

Did a search of this forum but was unable to come up with anything on this radio. Maybe there is but I may have put the incorrect criteria in.

1. In Airmail in the drop down box Under Options/ Settings what radio should be ticked as there is NO radio listed that matches their icom710/F?

2. Is there any other settings that are unique with this radio?

3. I am not sure but think that the frequencies will have to be manually entered. Is this correct?

Thank you

Chuck

Hi, Chuck,

Maybe the ham radio book will have an e-mail address for Jim Korenman, ex "Heart of Gold", KE6RK, and you could go straight to the horse's mouth!

Re: Help needed AIRMAIL setup for EU ICOM M700/F SSB

Back again needing more help

I contacted Sailmail and received the answer to my questions. The M700/F is the European version of the Icom M700. It will not control the radio and tuning will have to be done by hand.

I have a M802 with a Pactor Pro so am only really familiar with those.

Anyone using a M700 and Sailmail with a Pactor PTC-IIex modem?

Not sure is the Pactor PTC-IIex is even working correctly. When we turn on the radio and Pactor I see a quick blip of red along the lower set of lights. Then everything appears dark ....That's it!

When trying to use the airmail HF Window we get a reply that the Pactor initialization failed on the airmail program. The computer recognizes the com port ok.

Can anyone give me some ideas where I should go from here.

Does your PTC-IIex modem show lights on before attempting to send data?

Suggestions welcome

Thank You!!

Chuck

Set the connection options to PTC-IIex, the correct com port, and 57600 baud, and the radio connection to none.

When you power on the modem, the tuning indicator lights should have one light running back and forth until the modem connects to the computer. If that isn't happening, check the power connection. If its solid, you may have a modem problem.

The pctIIex manual is available at Downloads

Hi Don

The Pactor is powered by a 12V plug

I double checked the modem type in Airmail setup and its correct

Turned on the modem from a 12V breaker before turning on the radio. The led row on the bottom of the Pactor all lights lit up and stayed lit.

Radio then turned on and within 5 seconds this row of red lights went dark

Tried to connect again from the computer
Computer recognized the USB when plugged in
(There is a USB to PL-232 connector inline on the cable

It took about 10-15 seconds where the message on the bottom of airmail said "Initializing" before the message appeared PTC-IIe initialization failed. Check controller setup & retry.

Back to you

Thank you

Chuck
