Re: Heat pistols

My Bernzomatic ST2200T Butane Torch has been very handy for relaxing heat shrink tubing, using the included hot air blower.

The Master Varitemp Heat Gun is the tool I use now for heat shrink tubing.

It is unlikely that a 9V heat gun will provide long-term satisfaction w/ collapsing heat shrink tubing.

Re: Heat pistols

Again, link or at least a make & model# needed.

I use the little butane ones like for scorching crème brûlée, same cartridges I use in my portable Iwatani 35FW stove.

Re: Heat pistols

If you want a battery powered heat gun, Ryobi recently released one that works with their 18 volt batteries. It comes with a heat shrink deflector. If you already have Ryobi 18 volt tools it’s sounds like a good addition to your set.

Re: Heat pistols

Any other specific recommendations for butane ones? I was surprised to find nothing on CF (many posters say they use them, few say a favorite brand).

Re: Heat pistols

I have a mini butane one that is basically a cigarette lighter on steroids. I got it locally at a store but they can be had at Amazon.

I also have a 120 VAC one that came in a kit with heat shrink terminals and a 'tool' for crimping. Kit is out-of-stock at Amazon

Both are better than regular lighters or candles or plumbers' torches or whatever else I used in the past. The electric one does not have the same risk of burning the project like the fire-based ones do.

Re: Heat pistols

Perhaps I should clarify: I don’t have AC on the boat, DC seems like it would eat through batteries. I tried a small butane lighter I had sitting around, but it seemed like it might burn as much as melt. I see there are purpose built torches that seem like they should do better than a lighter, but can’t tell from the online reviews.

Re: Heat pistols

A Bic lighter works in a pinch. I have a mini butane torch too, which does a better job. I see them at just about every tool and hardware store, without an obvious brand. They're basically just butane lighters with better schnozzles. And I also have a 115vac paint-stripper heat gun which works well. I've never seen a low voltage electric heat gun, til that Ryobi posted upthread.

Re: Heat pistols

My Dremel torches have worked great. I’ve got 2, small and large. Can solder, hot knife, torch, or heat.

Re: Heat pistols

My Ancor died young which was disappointing considering the premium price

I use solder and heat shrink, a lot. I have had any number of butane torches, propane torches, heat guns, etc for shrinking heat shrink and offer this advice based on my experience.

Any of the flame-based ones will work if used gently and carefully. They are all too hot and are hard to control. Wind makes this worse. You can also, for that matter, use matches, or a zippo lighter, or a cigarette lighter, or a candle lighter. I do not find that fancy torches are an improvment over cheap lighters. In general they are worse because they put out more heat, and they still blow out.

I have had inexpensive hardware-store heat guns. They work much better than flame but require 120v. I have occasionally used industrial 120v heat guns that have much better temperature control that work even better.

At present I have a Milwaukee M18 battery operated heat gun which works extremely well. I have other tools that use this battery system. Runtime per battery pack is long enough not to be a major concern for heat shrink though it could become a nuisance with larger jobs e.g. removing paint or caulk from a large area. There are chargers for this system that will operate from 12v DC. I would recommend this tool, and similar competing products, as the absence of a cord is a major advantage and eliminates the need for flame-based alternatives.
