Headset/mic choices for M802

Folks, I'm looking to use a high quality headset with a boom mic in conjunction with my Icom M802 for voice. I've looked at Heil, but their Icom microphone connectors are limited to Icom's land-based transceivers - an 8 pin round connector, but larger in diameter than that used on the M802.

Any one using a boom mic with the M802 are are we stuck with using the Icom-supplied HM-135 and separate headphones?

Cheers,

TL

I can't answer your question directly, but I do remember when I was looking for a solution to my 802 mic problem someone had listed some alternative mikes that could be modified and the wiring that was required. I just had a quick search and didn't find it, but the info is here somewhere.

Re: Headset/mic choices for M802

For the last 8 years I have used a Yamaha CM500 headset https://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/7494 on an Icom 718 ( home ) and an Icom 706 Mk2G (boat)

For PTT I have just replaced an old faulty one with one of these... https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hand-PTT...53.m2749.l2649 which needed a 2.5/3.5 jack adapter... $3

Re: Headset/mic choices for M802

Gets a little fiddly getting from ether to ear but involves ... with the 706 ... an OPC-589 which needs to combined with a 'DIN thingo to two female 3.5 jacks' and an independent speaker jack... sounds mucky but quite simple... photo later.... you only need the latter bits with the 718...

Dunno what the 801/2 radios need.... but I imagine it is quite do-able...

Re: Headset/mic choices for M802

Photo....
I think the 802 has an 8 pin Din - same same the 718 - for the mic... and next to it a socket to take a speaker/headphone jack.
This is what I have... don't know where I found the 8pin Din to Mic/PTT jacks... it was 8 years ago... Ebay?
Left to right... from Yamaha... 3.5mm mic jack
Next... connection to PTT which is shown on right .. 2.5mm into 3.5mm jack...
On front of radio to right of the mic din...... speaker jack from Yamaha... 3.5mm into a big fat one xx.mm? and into radio...

Not complicated.....

FWIW: The manual specifies the mic jack on pages 63 & 65 ➥ http://www.icom.co.jp/world/support/...02_Ver11_0.pdf

Headset/mic choices for M802

Iíve looked for a better mic, and asked here a couple of times.
For some reason, they donít seem to exist, something I find hard to believe.
I do understand the headset, however I have been very impressed with this speaker compared to the stock one.

Adjust / refine keywords as needed.

Can also try substituting other sailing forum URLs

Re: Headset/mic choices for M802

Spoke with Steve Warford, Operations Director for Heil, who indicated they do not do custom cables, but Associated Radio, one of their retailers does. Their reply to my email:

I have supplied this adapter before. The cost is $99.95 plus $8 Priority Mail postage.

Please all me at 800-497-1457 if I can be of further assistance.

Thank you

Dan Harlow
Associated Radio
913-381-5900

Dan indicated the adapter takes about a week to procure parts and assemble. He also indicated the adapter includes a 1/4 inch phone receptacle to work with the Heil PTT switch included with Pro7.

Note: The M802 (and all other Icom radios) requires the "IC" version of the Pro7 that includes the IC Electret microphone, and will not work with the HC-7 or HC-74 dynamic microphones.

Cheers,

TL

No experience of the West Mountain kit but I have a couple of BHI noise reduction units.... one of these at the home QTH https://www.bhi-ltd.com/noise-cancel...t-in-line.html which I use with the Yamaha headset..
On the boat I have this.. https://www.bhi-ltd.com/noise-cancel...ers/dspkr.html which can be used with the headset or... as it often is ... just cleaning up broadcast stuff like the BBC African Service....

Both brilliant ....
