Again, do not skimp on electronics. You will be happier, and safer. Spend the money to get EVERYTHING.

Hi Brookie,

Well, I won't comment any more on new vs used, as he wants a new boat. That is fine. There is a certain comfort that comes along with purchasing a new boat. Things on boats wear out over time, no matter how spic-n-span a used boat might appear.

No electronics means no electronics. And yes, electronics can get expensive when selecting the highest grade items from the premium manufacturers. On our boat, my wife and I want everything available. It matters not to us if certain electronics are rarely used. They are fun to play with and seriously utilize when needed. We need full-time Internet connectivity. We are also investigating forward / side scanning sonar. For example, if there is a dependable way to know that a semi-submerged big log or shipping container is 75 yards directly in front of my bow, that is information that I want.

Everyone's wants and needs are different. We want ALL available electronics.

One of my issues with the double ender is where to put all the antennas and stuff. From the pictures I have seen it ends up looking like a giant jungle gym

That was the kind of list I was looking for. Now I will have to get a ballpark idea of cost to purchase and install. The purchase price is easier to find than instillation. The more I think about it the closer it is to the passport. The HC would have to make its way to the states or dubai and that is very costly

I don't know what the builder's game is but running all that wiring after the build seems weird and difficult.

Also unless you find a true rocket scientist (quality installer )in Thailand you may consider have the boatbuilder install conduiting with chaser lines and have the electrical installed when you are back in the USA.

You will probably save a bomb over importing the stuff to Thailand as well.

To the OP:
Roverhi, who has sailed far and wide for many years, is telling you to keep things simple, as there will be less headaches later.
Port Clyde, who it seems does not own a boat yet, is telling you to get EVERYTHING, forgetting (or more likely not knowing yet) the hassle of keeping all those fancy toys running.
Listen to Roverhi.
He has far more electronics than I do, so coming from a minimalist, here's the list of stuff I'd get if money were no object:
GPS
AIS
VHF
watermaker
Of those three, I currently have VHF and GPS, both handheld and AAA battery operated. Gets me around just fine.

In truth I don't know. The price quoted to me by the builder was half what the passport starts as. That is an awful lot of electronics and labor to make up for the difference. My biggest concern is not the electronics but the location. The boat is to be commissioned in Thailand. From there I either have to get it to dubai or to the states. Getting it to dubai is difficult because of pirates. Loading it onto a ship is an option but I am having trouble finding one that goes from phuket to dubai or even to the med. they all seem to want to take it to the U.S. There is a dealer in Europe that might be easier to deal with. But you pay the price either way.

Hi brookiesailor, as one of the known frugal sailors here, I do find your question rather odd. In an ironic sense I'm kinda with Port Clyde: buy everything. Clearly money is no issue, and I don't get the sense that you'll be doing much of your own maintenance, so why not buy everything?

My minimal (frugal) electronic needs are:

• Compass
• Barometer
• VHF/DSC with AIS receiver (b/c it's so cheap now)
• Depth/speed
• Handheld GPS (with a couple of backups)
• Chart books for the cruising area (no chartplotter)
• Windex & yarn (no electronic windy)
• Tracker (SPOT/inReach)

On the more electrical side (not exactly electronics):

• Solid windlass. I prefer manual, but on your size of boat a top quality electric is probably more feasible.
• Auto-pilot. Again, I prefer a windvane, but a top-quality below-deck electric or hydraulic is going to be vital.
• Fridge

You'll want a good charging system, so solar and possibly wind. Alternator, of course.

Things you don't need, but might still want (and can clearly afford):

• Big chartplotter
• Forward sweeping sonar
• Watermaker
• AIS transponder
• Freezer
• A/C
• Washer/dryer
• Heater
• Radar (although this might be a need depending on where you cruise)
• Sat phone
• SSB
• TV

In our world, delivering new with no electronics is normal. A second normal is offering one or maybe two builder-selected "packages." A third normal, but less common, is the builder installing whatever the buyer of a new boat selects. Just depends on the builder.

A common approach to a bare boat -- or for upgrading a used boat with older electronics -- is to use an electronics specialist (or company); select all your stuff, they do the install, etc. Often you can find someone local who does great work.

(We did a "market survey" in our area, got a short list of 3 very well respected installers, picked one of those based on various criteria, worked with them to select equipment and to do the install. All good. I could have been the "helper" during the install -- especially useful for running wires -- to save some labor cost, but as it happened I couldn't schedule my time that way. Didn't matter; labor wasn't a deal-breaker.)

If you can envision a new HC48... you should consider doing all the right electronics from the git-go. Integration is key, these days, and that's almost always easier to do all at once, rather than piecemeal. Integration is also made slightly easier by initial product selection, again useful to do as one system of systems. Others have posted good lists.

I am more of a minimalist than hubby is. I learned navigation on paper charts with hand bearing compass and the like. The boat had a vhf and that was it. That is my comfort zone at this point. I could learn to use the rest of it but not necessary in my life. I am not bashing my husband but his wants are more cosmopolitan than mine. He likes to tinker too.

Being able to afford things doesn't necessarily mean you have to have them. I live in dubai and can afford to drive a Maserati, however I choose to drive a third hand Mini Cooper. So having money doesn't change what is prudent to have. I am the one that chose the HC. It is sturdy and stable and I am not worried about knocking the keel off when as a novice I accidentally run into something. I like the traditional style. Yes getting it in and out of a berth is going to be a huge learning curve.

I looked into wind vane steering just yesterday and at least the company I was looking at said the displacement was beyond their capacity. So more than likely that means autopilot.

I don't think the boat is set up for a washer/dryer. I will check the specs but I think refrigerator is included.

I found the dealer in Europe and have been reading his website. Lots to think about
