Amateur radio operators are allowed to use the airwaves to buy and /or sell any and all radio equipment and anything related to amateur radio operations.

Re: Ham vs SSB for marine purposes

I would venture to say that there's no truth to the rumors that marine radios are superior to amateur radios. The only difference is possibly the marine versions have more protective coating on the boards to protect the unit from environmental conditions. Amateur radios are far more versatile and generally of higher quality. Almost all amateur radios produced currently are fully capable and designed to operate on marine ssb frequencies. This would not be illegal as they are dual purpose units and manufactured as such. Most older units contain the capability to be used either way by simple modifications which may be illegal. Any person may use any radio frequency in the case of an emergency or danger to life or property, no license required. Being in possession of a ships station license and an amateur radio license would prove very difficult to prosecute . An American amateur radio license is not
Legal in all countries as opposed to a maritime radio license. Caution should be used operating on amateur bands in other countries. KD0QOF
