Ham Vs Marine SSB frequencies?

I was listening recently on my Icom 802 to a conversation. I was tuning using the freq knob like a ham radio. How can I determine what frequencies are Ham and which are included in Marine SSB. I don't want to talk on Ham Freq (no ham license yet). Is the a chart someplace? Do the allowed freq overlap at all?--Thanks

No they do not .
Download the Commercial (marine) Frequencies from multiple sources including Icom, ARRL, ITU, FCC, etc.

Marine SSB frequencies are channelized. See here for the marine SSB simplex channels.

Ham frequencies vary my country. For US frequencies see here.

Thanks- I guess I'll make up my own chart from those provided sources so I have both Marine SSB and ham freq both on the same chart in ascending freq order.

First off, no the "marine" and "ham" bands, channels, frequencies do NOT overlap...


~~ The M-802 manual comes with detailed info on all the maritime channels...as well as a list of factory-provided "user-programmable" channels...
And, you can easily see which ones are "maritime" vs. "ham"...
BUT...


~~ But, since you were tuning in "VFO Mode", and you didn't mention what frequencies you were listening to, I have no idea what you were listening to...nor any way of telling you how to know!!
(this is why I'm always saying that those asking questions, provide more info...)


~~ The maritime mobile radio service ("Marine SSB") is an internationally allocated service, with all bands/channels the same in all countries...
{although some countries, like the US, also allow "shared, non-interference use" of other service's channels (such as "fixed service"), by maritime mobile stations}


~~ The amateur radio service ("ham radio") is also internationally allocated, but only some of these bands/frequencies are exclusive worldwide, and many countries have various ham band / frequency allocations, as well as ham radio license class and operating mode restrictions...


~~ I have no idea if you are in the US, are a US citizen, or are sailing a US-flagged vessel....but, with a name like "maine50", I will assume that you are in Maine and are talking about US ham radio allocations...so, that's what I will list here...as well as give you links to where you will find all the details...

Thanks all for all the info- I'm going to make a list of the freq ranges and who they are allocated to in sequence. It doesn't matter what frequency I was listening to, the question was whether there was a list (chart ) of the freq allocated to both Ham and Marine SSB. I just want to be able to look at 1 page and instantly know if I was listening to a Ham or SSB frequency. It's not more complicated than that. Thanks again for all who contribted.

Unfortunately, it is a bit more complicated than what you write....as we still don't know where you were at, nor what frequency you were listening to....and please understand that there are many more users of the HF spectrum than "marine" or "ham".
Aviation, Fixed, Land Mobile, various gov't agencies, military, etc. etc...

But, if all you wanted was a list of the "ham" and "marine" frequencies, I did post all of those in their entirety, above....just as you asked...


If the list was too detailed, how about this:

If you were listening to Voice communications from US hams, these are the only frequencies that you would have heard hams on:
1.8 - 2.0mhz
3.6 - 4mhz
7.125 - 7.3mhz
14.150 - 14.350mhz
18.110 - 18.168mhz
21.2 - 21.450mhz
24.930 - 24.890mhz
28.300 - 29.700mhz
As well as the 5 specific 60m channels (5330.5, 5346.5, 5357.0, 5371.5, 5403.5khz)


(as I wrote earlier, other countries have slightly different allocations, for various modes and license classes)

Ham radio operators can choose any freq within those bands (as long as their license class and nation allows their operation there), which is unlike the marine channels, which are specifically allocated channels, NOT just
using any frequency within the marine bands!!


If you were listening to voice communications on the maritime mobile service, the only frequencies would be the EXACT channels that I listed above....(sorry the list didn't post here in a orderly list, but I did include the links to the EXACT channels)

Please understand that ham radio operators can choose any freq within their allocated bands (as long as their license class and nation allows their operation there), which is unlike the marine channels, which are specifically allocated channels, NOT just using any frequency within the marine bands!!
And, this is why I listed the channels exactly....because they are specific channels, not just use any frequency in the band!!



Again, it is a bit more complicated than you write...

I cannot speak for Australia, but this is NOT the case in the US....you can buy whatever transmitter/transceiver you like, but it is up to YOU to not transmit where you are not supposed to / up to YOU to obtain the appropriate licenses...

I've purchased various transmitters for different services over the past 40 years, and there are no such restriction in the US...

Please understand that there are many more users of the HF spectrum than "marine" or "ham".
Aviation, Fixed, Land Mobile, various gov't agencies, military, etc. etc...
This why knowing where you are located, what time-of-day, and what frequency you were listening to, are all important pieces of the puzzle...



But, in a nutshell...
If you were listening to Voice communications from US hams, these are the only frequencies that you would have heard hams on:
1.8 - 2.0mhz
3.6 - 4mhz
7.125 - 7.3mhz
14.150 - 14.350mhz
18.110 - 18.168mhz
21.2 - 21.450mhz
24.930 - 24.890mhz
28.300 - 29.700mhz
As well as the 5 specific 60m channels (5330.5, 5346.5, 5357.0, 5371.5, 5403.5khz)
(as I wrote earlier, other countries have slightly different allocations, for various modes and license classes)
