The poll allows more than one answer, i.e. radio and sat phone so if a respondent clicks both blocks, you end up with more than 100%. If we don't split hairs, there is some useful information here.

Unlike an Iranian election.

Apologies, just noticed this.

The first time I left NZ was in '78 - radios hadn't been invented back then. The next two boats were purchased outside NZ, sailed outside NZ then sold outside NZ.

I've also done a few deliveries leaving from NZ, if the boat was registered outside NZ, no problem (on these I would take a satphone just so i could call my wife to say hello occasionally as she doesn't usually accompany me on deliveries), on NZ registerd boats they would have them but generally i would leave them turned off.

When I choose to sail away from NZ again on my own boat I have a scheme for avoiding the cat 1 nonsense which I'll tell you about after I've done it.

What, no choice for GMRS? LOL! Reasonably inexpensive equipment, FCC license is inexpensive and easy to get, and with a 50 watt box and an antenna on the mast you can get a 50 mile radius under good conditions. Total out-of-pocket expense for a good (Icom) 50watt base station, antenna, FCC license, out the door for between $400-$500.

Is it a safe assumption that there is no benefit to getting licenses issued by a US government agency if one does not live or operate inside US waters? I am pretty sure the FCC has no jurisdiction here. I am questioning why I would send money to them. I mean, I wouldn't buy licenses from France, Australia, or South Africa either, unless I planned to operate in their waters.

Well, an FCC license would make for a wise investment, just in case the US invaded the Turks & Caicos and declared them to be our twelfth "insular territory".

Other than that, let me tell you, there are better things to use if you run out of TP.

the brits just took over the TCI for the next two years, put the Govenor in charge. Kicked the local government completely out. Fallout still settling.

If the US took this place over, I would have to move someplace else!!

If that's all there was to life, I would be living in the VI or Puerto Rico.

Hey, UPS just got me a 12 lb box full of Yamaha parts and software from Wisconsin in TWO DAYS!!! That beats Fed Ex's best time to date and it was cheaper.
